Town Trail

The trails are divided into two parts. Part one is named the Town Trail, and takes us around St Peter Port, to places that would have been well known to Victor Hugo. During the 15 years that Victor Hugo lived in Guernsey, he explored energetically. Many of the places that he visited here inspired his writing, and certainly his time
here in Guernsey was a period of great productivity. The Victor Hugo Trails do not follow a chronological order, but chooses different themes to illustrate Victor Hugo’s work, life and beliefs. We hope that it will provide an entertaining and informative introduction to the great author.

Cliffs Trail

The second part of the Victor Hugo Trails, The Cliff Trail, stretches around the cliffs that link St Peter Port to the beach of Fermain, a beauty spot that Hugo often walked to, to swim, picnic, and gaze at his beloved France, which is visible on clear days
from its rocky shore.

Victor Hugo would often use his carriage from Fermain to return to Hauteville House. Instead, it is now possible to catch a bus, or walk back through Fort George, which at the time of Victor Hugo was an active garrison, to return to St Peter Port. This section of the trail is quite hilly and challenging, being mostly off road on paths that can be muddy, and is not recommended for wheelchair and pram users.
