The Ladies’ College production of Les Misérables, the musical based on Victor Hugo’s celebrated novel, was an absolute triumph. Sold out every night over its 3-night run in the last week of January, it was a testament to the tireless work and professionalism of all involved, and an affirmation of the story’s enduring appeal to all audiences.
The musical itself is a classic, and so many of the songs are catchy. I’m still humming Master of the House which was performed with great gusto by the assembled cast.
“The Glums”, as Les Misérables is sometimes called, was first performed in London’s the West End 40 years ago. Over the course of this year, there are multiple celebrations of this anniversary including Les Misérables – The Arena Spectacular, which has been touring the UK, and Hugh Jackman performing songs from Les Misérables in the BST music concert at Hyde Park this summer.
The Victor Hugo Centre team enjoyed engaging with people before and after the concert and had some fascinating conversations. It is an important part of Guernsey’s heritage that our island is so closely associated with the writing of a globally loved and recognised story.
Well done to all the cast, and particularly to Director and Head of Drama, Maggie King, for such a stellar event!
